Taranga Hill–Ambaji–Abu Road Rail Project Gains Momentum, Major Works Underway

Abu Road, March 20, 2026: The Taranga Hill–Ambaji–Abu Road new rail line project is progressing at a rapid pace, with key infrastructure works such as earthwork, station buildings, road under bridges, and tunnels currently underway.

The project, considered a key initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, is being closely monitored to ensure timely completion.


₹3,050 Crore Project to Enhance Regional Connectivity

The 116.65 km long railway project is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹3,050 crore, aiming to significantly improve connectivity between Rajasthan and Gujarat.

  • New platform under construction at Abu Road
  • Station building work started at Taranga Hill and Ambaji
  • Target to complete four major tunnels by March 2027

PMO Monitoring Progress Through Technology

The project is under close supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO):

  • Progress monitored via drone-based photography and videography
  • Regular updates submitted to ensure adherence to timelines
  • Focus on quality and timely execution

13 Tunnels Planned, Longest at Ambaji

A total of 13 tunnels are being constructed under the project, with a combined length of 13 km.

  • Longest tunnel: 2,300 metres near Ambaji
  • Constructed using NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method)

Additionally, the route will feature a major bridge near Surpagla village in Abu Road block, with a height of 80 metres.


Project to Cover Four Districts Across Two States

The rail line will pass through:

  • Rajasthan: Sirohi
  • Gujarat: Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha

A total of 15 railway stations will be developed, including a major station at Ambaji, where a six-storey passenger facility is being constructed.


Boost to Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The project will connect key religious destinations:

  • Ambaji Shaktipeeth
  • Taranga Hill, a prominent Jain and Buddhist pilgrimage site

Taranga Hill, located in the Aravalli range in Mehsana district, is known for:

  • A 12th-century Jain temple
  • Ancient Buddhist caves (Jogidani cave)

The rail connectivity is expected to benefit lakhs of pilgrims visiting these sites annually.


Work Progressing Across Abu Road Region

Construction activities are ongoing in several areas, including:

  • Kui, Chandrawati, Siyawa, Surpagla, Deri
  • Tunnel construction and track laying
  • Temporary labs set up for testing and quality checks

A new platform at Abu Road station will facilitate passenger train operations under the project.


Transforming Connectivity and Tourism

Once completed, the project will:

  • Improve regional connectivity
  • Boost tourism and pilgrimage travel
  • Strengthen economic activity in the region

The Taranga Hill–Ambaji–Abu Road rail line is expected to become a major infrastructure boost for western India.
