Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U) has achieved a new milestone in the housing sector. More than 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned so far under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0. Of these, the construction of over 1 crore houses has been completed, and they have been handed over to the beneficiaries.
With this significant achievement, the government is now further accelerating the implementation of PMAY-U 2.0 to provide affordable and safe housing to the maximum number of eligible urban families.
The 8th Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) meeting of PMAY-U 2.0 was held in New Delhi on August 6, 2026 under the chairmanship of Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development, MoHUA. The meeting involved a review of the scheme’s progress and discussions on approving additional housing proposals from States and Union Territories.
During the meeting, more than 2.09 lakh houses were approved for EWS families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 across the states and Union Territories of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Under PMAY-U 2.0, approximately 1.42 lakh houses have been approved under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) component, wherein eligible beneficiaries will receive assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh to construct a pucca house on their own land. Meanwhile, 67,045 houses have been sanctioned under the Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) component, which will be constructed through a partnership between public and private agencies.
With the latest approvals, the total number of houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 has crossed 18.38 lakh; this includes 14.40 lakh BLC houses and 2.48 lakh AHP units, while 1.36 lakh houses have been allocated to beneficiaries under the Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS) and 13,046 houses have been sanctioned as Affordable Rental Housing (ARH).
This housing program also focuses on vulnerable and marginalized sections, including eligible SC, ST, and OBC communities, minorities, the elderly, persons with disabilities, transgender individuals, and other disadvantaged groups.
In the 8th meeting of the CSMC, 2.03 lakh of the 2.09 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 were allocated to women. Meanwhile, 16,662 houses were sanctioned for senior citizens, 21,954 for SC, 14,252 for ST, and 75,511 for OBC beneficiaries.
PMAY-U 2.0 reinforces the government’s commitment to providing safe, affordable, and dignified housing to the urban poor. Building upon the foundation of PMAY-U, the scheme aims to meet the housing needs of an additional 1 crore eligible urban families. Its various provisions offer options such as house construction, affordable housing, interest subsidies on home loans, and quality rental housing.
