Nishikant Dubey Criticises Rahul Gandhi Over Remarks on India–US Trade Agreement

Date:

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Monday strongly criticised Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his video statement on the India–US interim trade agreement, accusing him of misrepresenting the economic framework of the deal.

Addressing the media in Udaipur, Dubey defended the government’s trade policy, stating that protective measures have been in place to safeguard domestic cotton farmers. He said that for the past several years, an import duty of around 11 per cent has been imposed to protect farmers’ interests. According to Dubey, once safeguards are ensured, the focus shifts towards enhancing the competitiveness of the textile sector, particularly as India competes with countries such as Vietnam in global markets.

Dubey further claimed that under the India–US trade arrangement, exporters from small-scale industries—who contribute significantly to outbound shipments—would benefit from zero per cent tariffs in certain segments. He said the objective of the agreement is to strengthen Indian exporters while balancing domestic sectoral interests.

The BJP MP also made sharp personal remarks against Rahul Gandhi during his statement. Political observers note that the exchange is part of an ongoing debate between the ruling BJP and the Congress over the implications of the India–US trade framework.

The Congress has expressed concerns regarding various aspects of the agreement, stating that issues relating to farmers and domestic industries require careful scrutiny. The trade deal continues to be a subject of political discussion at the national level.
