Strategic, Trade and Investment on Agenda as PM Modi Starts Australia Visit Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a three-day visit to Australia starting Wednesday. At the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, he will participate in the annual Leaders’ Summit being held in Melbourne from July 8 to 10. During this visit, the two leaders will hold bilateral talks. The visit aims to give fresh momentum to the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and further strengthen economic, strategic, and people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Bilateral Talks and Key Meetings

Prime Minister Modi will hold comprehensive bilateral talks with his counterpart, Anthony Albanese. Additionally, he will meet with Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn. Discussions are expected to cover several key issues, including defence, trade, investment, education, technology, and regional cooperation.

Addressing the CEO Forum and the Indian Diaspora

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will participate in the India-Australia CEO Forum and address leading industrialists and business leaders from both countries. He will also address a large gathering of the Indian diaspora in Melbourne. The Indian diaspora is considered a strong pillar of the relationship between the two nations.

India Described as a Key Economic Partner

Ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described India as a key economic partner for Australia. A statement issued by the Australian Prime Minister’s Office noted that as the world’s fourth-largest and fastest-growing economy, India is strategically and economically vital to Australia.

‘An Honour to Welcome Prime Minister Modi’

Anthony Albanese stated that it is an honour for him to welcome his friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to Australia for the annual Leaders’ Summit. He remarked that the India-Australia relationship is more important than ever and that the partnership between the two nations plays a crucial role in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Focus on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Albanese noted that the relationship between the two countries is based on a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, underpinned by strong economic and cultural ties. He reiterated the commitment to further deepen the partnership with India.

Vedic Havan in Melbourne; excitement surrounding the visit

Ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s arrival, members of the Indian community in Melbourne organised a Vedic havan to welcome him. Significant enthusiasm is evident within the Indian community regarding the Prime Minister’s visit.

High Commissioner notes rapid strengthening of ties

India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Nagesh Singh, stated that Prime Minister Modi’s third visit to Australia in a decade is a strong indicator of the strengthening relationship between the two nations. He noted that in the changing global landscape, India and Australia share common strategic interests, which has brought the two countries closer together.

Growing cooperation across sectors—from defence to technology

Nagesh Singh mentioned that the bilateral relationship was elevated to the status of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020. Since then, cooperation has steadily strengthened in areas such as defence and security, trade and investment, clean energy, education, skill development, emerging technologies, mobility, and people-to-people ties—reflecting the deepening bond between the two nations.
