The Government of Rajasthan, Haryana Sign Yamuna Water Project Agreement in Amit Shah’s Presence

Date:

Rajasthan: In the presence of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah, Rajasthan and Haryana signed a historic agreement in New Delhi for the construction and implementation of the Yamuna Water Project. In his address, Amit Shah stated that this agreement has resolved a water-related issue faced by the people of Haryana and Rajasthan for nearly three decades. He remarked that this agreement is an excellent example of the mantra of ‘Solution through Dialogue’ given by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Shri Amit Shah stated that under this agreement, Rajasthan will receive approximately 580 MCM of Yamuna water through three underground pipelines between July and October, benefiting both Rajasthan and Haryana. He described it as a mutually beneficial agreement containing clear provisions for cost-sharing, water allocation, maintenance, transparency, and dispute resolution.

This agreement, formulated by Haryana, Rajasthan, and most notably the Central Water Commission (CWC), will remain in effect without dispute for several decades to come. He stated that a resolution was reached within just a few days under the chairmanship of Union Jal Shakti Minister Shri C.R. Patil. Following this agreement, drinking water will be supplied to the Sikar, Churu, and Jhunjhunu districts of Rajasthan, as well as the Bhiwani and Fatehabad areas of Haryana.

Amit Shah stated that this agreement would significantly improve the drinking water supply in Rajasthan and Haryana, particularly in Rajasthan. Water that previously went to waste will now meet people’s needs and help recharge groundwater. This reflects the spirit of cooperative federalism, in line with the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The objective of this project is to deliver Rajasthan’s share of Yamuna water from the Western Yamuna Canal via an underground pipeline system. This will enable the state to effectively utilize the water allocated to it under the 1994 agreement regarding the sharing of utilizable surface water from the Upper Yamuna Basin.

This project is expected to benefit millions of people in the arid and low-rainfall regions of Rajasthan by ensuring a reliable supply of drinking water and fostering socio-economic development. The agreement also lays the foundation for the timely implementation of the project through the concerted efforts of the Central government and the participating state governments. (PIB)
