State’s first endoscopic brain tumour surgery successfully conducted at AIIMS Jodhpur

Rajasthan: AIIMS Jodhpur has performed Rajasthan’s first endoscopic brain tumour removal surgery, marking a significant development in minimally invasive neurosurgical treatment in the state. The procedure was carried out on a patient suffering from a skull base tumour using an advanced endoscopic technique, and was led by a team of neurosurgeons at the institute. Hospital officials said the surgery represents a major step in expanding access to modern, less invasive neurological care in government healthcare facilities in Rajasthan.

According to AIIMS Jodhpur, the surgery involved the use of a high-definition endoscope inserted through the nasal cavity to access and remove the tumour, avoiding the need for traditional open skull surgery. The patient is reported to be recovering well under post-operative observation. Doctors involved in the procedure said the technique allows surgeons to reach deep-seated brain tumours with greater precision while minimising damage to surrounding tissues.

The procedure was performed by the Department of Neurosurgery at AIIMS Jodhpur, with support from anaesthesiology and otorhinolaryngology specialists. Hospital authorities stated that the successful operation demonstrates the growing capability of the institute in handling complex neurosurgical cases using advanced technology.

Officials at AIIMS Jodhpur said the use of endoscopic techniques in brain tumour surgery offers several advantages compared to conventional open surgery. These include smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery time, and lower risk of post-operative complications. They added that such procedures are particularly beneficial for tumours located at the skull base, which are often difficult to access through traditional surgical methods.

The institute described the operation as a milestone for public healthcare in Rajasthan, noting that advanced neurosurgical procedures are increasingly being introduced in government hospitals to reduce dependence on private healthcare facilities for complex treatments.

Doctors involved in the surgery said the tumour was located in a critical region of the skull base, making the case technically challenging. The endoscopic approach allowed the surgical team to access the tumour through the nasal passage without external incisions, improving surgical precision while reducing trauma to the patient.

AIIMS Jodhpur officials said the success of the procedure reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen super-specialty services at the institute. They added that the hospital has been investing in advanced surgical equipment and training programmes to enable doctors to perform complex procedures using minimally invasive techniques.

The neurosurgery team stated that endoscopic skull base surgery is still an evolving field in India and is being gradually adopted in select tertiary care centres. They said the procedure requires specialised training and coordination between multiple departments, including neurosurgery, ENT, radiology, and anaesthesia.

Hospital authorities also highlighted the importance of such advancements in improving healthcare access for patients from rural and semi-urban areas, who often travel long distances to metropolitan cities for specialised treatment. They said expanding advanced surgical capabilities within AIIMS Jodhpur will help reduce patient load on larger metro hospitals.

Medical experts noted that brain tumour surgeries are among the most complex procedures in neurosurgery, and the adoption of endoscopic techniques represents a shift towards less invasive, technology-driven treatment methods. They added that outcomes in such procedures depend on early diagnosis, tumour location, and surgical expertise.

AIIMS Jodhpur said it plans to continue expanding its neurosurgical programme and introduce more minimally invasive procedures in the future. The institute also aims to strengthen training for young doctors in advanced endoscopic and microsurgical techniques.

With this successful operation, AIIMS Jodhpur has positioned itself among the growing number of Indian medical institutions adopting modern surgical technologies for complex neurological conditions, reflecting broader advancements in the country’s public healthcare system.
