Rajasthan: In a strong push to promote cleaner and more efficient energy use, the Rajasthan government has announced a large-scale plan to organise Piped Natural Gas (PNG) camps in Kota starting May 1. The initiative is aimed at making it easier for residents to get PNG connections and is part of a broader effort to expand gas infrastructure and reduce reliance on traditional LPG cylinders in urban areas.
Officials say these camps are being designed with convenience in mind. Instead of visiting multiple offices, residents will be able to apply for PNG connections, complete paperwork, and get their questions answered on the spot. The idea is to simplify the process, especially for families who have not yet switched to piped gas. By setting up camps within residential areas, authorities hope to bring services closer to people and encourage more households to make the transition.
In the first phase, the campaign will cover several localities across Kota over a span of a few days. Camps will be held during the day to ensure maximum participation. Residents can walk in, submit applications, verify documents, and even understand how installation and usage work, all without the hassle of running from one office to another. This doorstep approach is expected to speed up the process and attract a larger number of applicants.
Officials involved in the project stress that the initiative is not just about convenience. It is also a step towards promoting safer and more environmentally friendly energy solutions. Compared to LPG cylinders, PNG is considered cleaner as it helps reduce carbon emissions and removes the risks linked to cylinder storage and handling. Over time, wider adoption of PNG could lead to better air quality and improved living standards in urban areas.
The camps are also linked to a bigger goal. The state government is working towards creating “LPG-free zones” in selected cities, where piped gas becomes the main source of fuel for households. This aligns with ongoing efforts to modernise energy systems and promote sustainable alternatives. Similar drives are expected to be rolled out in other parts of Rajasthan in the coming months.
Apart from environmental benefits, PNG is also seen as a more practical option for daily use. It offers continuous supply through pipelines, which means no more waiting for cylinder refills or dealing with sudden shortages. It can also help households manage costs better, as users pay for the gas they consume without worrying about fluctuating cylinder prices.
Local authorities are also focusing on spreading awareness to ensure the success of the campaign. Through these camps, residents will be informed about the benefits, safety features, and long-term savings associated with PNG connections. The initiative is likely to be especially useful for people living in apartments and densely populated areas, where pipeline connections can be set up more efficiently.
Experts believe that such ground-level efforts can make a real difference in speeding up India’s shift towards cleaner fuels. By making the process simple and accessible, and by actively engaging with residents, the government is trying to build a model that could be replicated in other cities as well.
