Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has lauded the ambitious Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP), calling it a transformative initiative that will address the state’s chronic water shortage. Speaking about the project, Sharma emphasized its significance and the vital role it will play in improving water availability across Rajasthan.
“This (ERCP) is such an ambitious scheme, and it was started in Surat by Union Minister CR Patil under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said Sharma. “This is a very big work, and I can say that this will prove to be a boon for Rajasthan, installing 1,60,000 borewells. A very big work will be done inside Rajasthan because there is a lot of shortage of water in the state.”
The Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project is a large-scale water management initiative aimed at addressing the perennial water scarcity issues faced by the state. The project is designed to provide a sustainable solution to the water crisis by constructing a canal system that will supply water to areas that have long struggled with drought and inadequate access to irrigation and drinking water.
Sharma highlighted the scale of the project, with plans to install over 160,000 borewells as part of the initiative, which is expected to significantly enhance the state’s water infrastructure. The CM expressed confidence that the ERCP will provide long-term benefits, particularly to rural communities, farmers, and urban centers in the arid regions of Rajasthan.
The project is backed by the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and Union Minister CR Patil, with a vision to enhance water conservation and management in the state. By implementing such a large-scale water distribution network, the ERCP aims to ensure equitable water distribution, boost agricultural productivity, and improve the overall quality of life for residents.
Given Rajasthan’s history of water shortages and the challenges posed by its desert-like conditions, the ERCP is seen as a crucial step toward sustainable water resource management. The project is expected to reduce dependency on seasonal rains and improve water security across the state.
