In a major step to strengthen the rural economy and reduce financial pressure on cultivators, the Rajasthan government will provide interest-free loans to 27 lakh farmers. This will help farmers in cultivating crops without thinking about the financial issues.
Under the scheme, cooperative banks and agricultural credit societies will provide short-term interest-free loans to eligible farmers to support crop cultivation, purchase of seeds, fertilizers, irrigation facilities, and other farming-related expenses. The initiative is part of the state government’s broader focus on farmer welfare and agricultural development.
According to recent budget announcements, Rajasthan has significantly increased allocations for agriculture and allied sectors. The government has earmarked substantial funds for interest subsidies and rural credit support to ensure easier access to farm finance. Officials say the move is expected to particularly benefit small and marginal farmers struggling with rising input costs and unpredictable weather conditions.
The scheme will be implemented through cooperative institutions, including Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) and district cooperative banks. Farmers who repay loans within the prescribed period will not have to pay any interest, reducing dependence on private moneylenders and easing debt burdens.
Agriculture experts believe interest-free loans can help improve crop productivity, encourage timely sowing, and promote the use of modern farming equipment and irrigation systems. Alongside this initiative, the state government has also announced several measures related to farm mechanisation, solar pumps, warehousing, and dairy development.
Agriculture continues to play a vital role in Rajasthan’s economy, employing a significant portion of the rural population. However, farmers in many districts still face challenges such as water scarcity, climate uncertainty, and rising cultivation costs.
The latest initiative is expected to provide financial relief to lakhs of farmers ahead of the upcoming sowing season while strengthening Rajasthan’s cooperative credit system and rural economy.
