Jaipur: In a major step towards smart traffic management, Jaipur is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled hi-tech traffic signals at key intersections across the city, aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion.
According to officials, the initiative is part of a broader plan to develop an AI-powered integrated traffic control system that will modernise urban mobility in the city. The new system is expected to work in coordination with the existing traffic management framework and future smart city infrastructure projects.
The AI-based signals will use high-resolution CCTV cameras installed at junctions to monitor real-time traffic density on all approaching roads. Based on the data collected, the system will automatically adjust signal timings by increasing or decreasing green-light duration depending on traffic load, ensuring smoother movement of vehicles.
Officials said the technology will help in reducing unnecessary waiting time at less busy lanes while clearing congested stretches more efficiently. The system is also expected to improve road safety and traffic discipline through automated monitoring.
In addition to traffic flow management, the AI-enabled system will also support real-time violation detection, including offences such as helmet violations, seat belt non-compliance, and other traffic rule breaches, enabling faster enforcement action through e-challan generation.
The Jaipur traffic department is currently reviewing the system after successful implementation of a pilot AI traffic signal installed at Fatehpura Circle in Udaipur, which has shown encouraging results.
Officials said the project is being developed as part of Rajasthan’s broader push towards intelligent transport systems and smart city infrastructure, with plans to gradually expand AI-based traffic control to more junctions in Jaipur.
Once implemented, the AI-enabled signals are expected to significantly improve traffic efficiency, reduce congestion at peak hours, and strengthen enforcement of traffic rules across the city.
