Jaipur: The sporting scene at the University of Rajasthan is set for a major boost as the University of Rajasthan Sports Board will host the All India Inter-University Handball Men’s Tournament from April 21 to April 25 at the University Sports Complex.
The national-level competition will feature 16 university teams from across India, marking the return of the tournament to Jaipur after a gap of 12 years, officials confirmed.
The event was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Alpana Kateja, in the presence of notable sporting personalities including para swimmer Dr. Satyendra Singh Lohiya and Arjuna Awardee Gopal Saini, highlighting the importance of the tournament at the university and national level.
The competition will follow a league-cum-knockout format, with teams divided into four groups. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, resulting in a total of 32 matches scheduled over five days.
Organisers said the format has been designed to ensure maximum competitive exposure for university athletes and to promote the growth of handball at the inter-university level.
Host team Rajasthan University, which is also the West Zone inter-university champion, has been placed in Group C and will compete against strong university sides from across the country. The home team’s performance will be closely watched as it plays on familiar grounds.
Officials confirmed that all logistical arrangements, accommodation facilities, and sports infrastructure preparations have been completed, with participating teams already arriving in Jaipur ahead of the tournament.
The event is being seen as a significant revival of university-level sports in Rajasthan, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent at a national stage after a long gap.
The tournament will conclude on April 25, with the final match followed by a prize distribution ceremony to honour the winning teams.
