BJP MP Mahima Kumari Mewar has raised strong objections to the NCERT Class 8 Social Science textbook, alleging historical inaccuracies regarding the Maratha Empire’s territorial reach. According to Mewar, the textbook wrongly depicts parts of Rajasthan, including the Mewar region, as being under Maratha rule—an assertion she calls factually incorrect and misleading.
“NCERT has presented false information. They have shown the Mewar area under Maratha rule, which never happened in history. This is a serious distortion and misguides the young generation,” said Mewar, the MP from Chittorgarh and a descendant of the Mewar royal family.
She expressed concern over how such errors in academic material could affect the historical understanding of students, especially when it concerns regions with a rich and proud legacy of independence like Mewar. “What history are you teaching to the young generation?” she questioned.
The BJP MP further stated that she has spoken with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan regarding the matter. “He assured me that the errors will be rectified. We are hopeful that this will definitely happen,” she said.
The issue has sparked debate among historians and education experts, with some calling for a comprehensive review of historical maps and references in school textbooks.
NCERT has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but sources within the Education Ministry suggest that a textbook review committee may be convened to verify the claims and make necessary corrections if required.
The controversy adds to the growing scrutiny over the content of school curricula and the demand for historical accuracy in educational materials across the country.
