Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the 8th edition of ‘WindERGY India 2026’ in Chennai on Thursday. During the event, he highlighted the rapid growth of wind energy in India and emphasized the goal of achieving an installed wind energy capacity of 100 GW by 2030.
The Global Wind Energy Conference, held from October 7 to 9, has drawn approximately 400 exhibitors and 500 delegates from over 20 countries, alongside country pavilions from Denmark, Germany, and Spain. Tamil Nadu Energy Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar and industry representatives attended the inaugural ceremony.
Wind Sector Expansion Gains Fresh Push.
Joshi said India achieved its highest-ever annual wind power installation of 6.05 GW in FY2025-26, and expressed confidence that installations would exceed this record in FY2026-27. India had 59.20 GW of installed wind capacity as of September 30, 2026, putting the country on course to cross the 100 GW mark by 2030.
The Union Minister stated that a robust project pipeline and a supportive policy framework are expected to sustain the sector’s expansion and strengthen India’s position in global wind energy production and exports.
Tamil Nadu’s key role in expanding wind power was highlighted, with the state promoting initiatives such as its wind repowering policy. Representatives from several states were also recognised for their efforts in facilitating land, securing clearances and resolving Right-of-Way issues.
Announcements regarding international and domestic collaborations—including the IWTMA-BWE Global MoU, IWTMA-PTB LoI, and IWTMA-OECD cooperation—were also made at the event with the aim of fostering technology and innovation in India’s wind sector. Additionally, reports titled “Energy Transition in Tamil Nadu” and “Revisiting Contractual Mechanisms for the Indian Wind Sector” were released.
