The Indian Air Force (IAF) has carried out a successful emergency landing exercise on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh, where fighter jets and transport aircraft used a specially designated highway stretch as a temporary runway, demonstrating India’s growing focus on defence preparedness and rapid response capability.
The exercise was conducted on a selected section of the Lucknow–Sultanpur corridor of the expressway, which has been developed as an Emergency Landing Field (ELF). During the operation, the IAF tested the expressway’s ability to support both take-off and landing of military aircraft, including fighter jets and transport planes, under controlled operational conditions.
Officials confirmed that the drill involved multiple aircraft movements, showcasing how the expressway can function as an alternative runway during wartime or national emergencies. The test is part of a broader defence strategy that aims to integrate key highways and expressways across India into a dual-use infrastructure network capable of supporting military operations when required.
The Purvanchal Expressway has been identified as a strategically important corridor due to its long, straight stretches, strong pavement design, and secure operational environment, making it suitable for emergency aviation use. Defence authorities stated that such infrastructure significantly improves the armed forces’ ability to respond quickly during critical situations.
According to officials, the exercise also highlighted the operational readiness and flexibility of the Indian Air Force, which demonstrated its capability to shift seamlessly between traditional airbases and highway-based runways. The successful test reflects strong coordination between the IAF, Uttar Pradesh government, and expressway authorities, ensuring that safety standards and technical requirements are strictly maintained.
The use of highways as emergency airstrips is considered a major boost to India’s defence infrastructure, especially in regions where rapid deployment of air assets is crucial for national security. Such facilities allow aircraft to operate closer to potential operational zones, thereby reducing response time during emergencies or conflict scenarios.
The Purvanchal Expressway, one of Uttar Pradesh’s key infrastructure projects, has previously also hosted similar military exercises. These drills typically involve temporary closure of sections of the highway, deployment of security forces, and strict coordination between civil and defence agencies to ensure safe aircraft operations.
Officials further added that the latest exercise is part of routine training and preparedness activities, aimed at strengthening India’s multi-domain operational capabilities and integration of civilian infrastructure into defence planning.
With this successful trial, the Indian Air Force has once again demonstrated its ability to effectively utilize dual-purpose infrastructure assets, reinforcing India’s emphasis on mobility, flexibility, and rapid deployment readiness in modern warfare strategy.
