PM Modi Calls for Global Reforms at U.N. General Assembly Amid Quad Meeting

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 79th U.N. General Assembly on September 22, 2024, urging for essential reforms in global institutions to enhance international peace and development. His remarks came during the Summit of the Future, a two-day event that emphasizes the need for updated multilateral frameworks to address contemporary global challenges.

The summit, which precedes a high-level meeting of world leaders at the U.N. headquarters, was inspired by a year-long initiative led by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Guterres called on world leaders to renew their commitment to multilateralism, advocating for a revamping of the international system to better respond to rapidly changing global dynamics.

While in New York, Modi also rallied thousands of supporters in Long Island, highlighting his government’s achievements over the past decade and outlining ambitious future plans. He praised the contributions of the Indian diaspora, recognizing their role in strengthening India’s ties with the global community.

In addition to his U.N. address, Modi met with leaders of the Quad alliance—U.S. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida—at Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware. This sixth summit-level meeting yielded a range of collaborative initiatives, including the launch of a new coast guard exercise, the development of a logistics network, enhanced maritime surveillance, and a project targeting cervical cancer.

As the summit unfolds, the focus on multilateral cooperation and reform is expected to dominate discussions, with leaders looking to forge a path forward in addressing the pressing issues facing humanity and the planet.
