Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian chess team on Monday for their stellar performance at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In this tournament, India won the silver medal in the Open category and the bronze medal in the Women’s category.
India also clinched the Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy for the best combined performance across both categories. FIDE confirmed India’s silver medal in the Open section following a 2-2 draw with Hungary, while the women’s team won the bronze medal on a tie-break after drawing 2-2 with Georgia.
In a post on X, Modi congratulated the Indian players, praising their passion and determination and saying their success could motivate more youngsters to take up chess and excel.
Indian players also won several individual honors; R. Praggnanandhaa won bronze, B. Savitha Shri won gold, and Divya Deshmukh won silver, while Koneru Humpy and Vantika Agrawal secured individual bronze medals.
Uzbekistan won gold in the Open section, while Germany secured bronze. In the women’s section, China won gold and Kazakhstan took silver and India claimed the bronze medal.
India’s Open team finished with 18 match points, while Uzbekistan topped the standings with 20 points. In the women’s competition, India also finished on 18 points. With this result, India has delivered another magnificent performance at the Chess Olympiad; the country secured podium finishes in both categories and retained the overall Federation Trophy.
