Emergency Anniversary: Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma Slams Congress, Recalls Historical Wrongs

Date:

Marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, calling the imposition of Emergency a deep betrayal of democracy and linking it to a broader pattern of power-driven decisions, including the Partition of India.

Speaking at a public event in Jodhpur, Sharma said, “Can this ever be forgotten? ‘Jiski fati nahi biwai, wo kya jaane peer parayi’ — those who didn’t suffer during the Emergency will never understand its pain. People were jailed, families torn apart — all just for one person’s hunger for power.”

He criticized the Congress leadership, accusing them of misusing state machinery for political gain. Referring to the arrest of opposition leaders and suppression of civil liberties during the 1975–77 period, he said, “Ask the people what they endured during that time, all for a ‘Chair’ (power). The people of India remember what depths were stooped to for political survival.”

CM Sharma also revisited history, saying, “Had Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel become the Prime Minister, the country would not have been partitioned.” The remark highlighted ongoing BJP narratives that link past political decisions to present-day consequences.

The BJP is observing the Emergency anniversary nationwide, reminding citizens of what it calls the “murder of democracy,” and highlighting the importance of safeguarding civil liberties.
