Rajasthan’s Bumper Mustard Harvest Brings Joy to Farmers Amidst New Demands

Date:

A bumper mustard crop this year has brightened the faces of farmers across Rajasthan. The state’s leading role in mustard production has prompted calls for special government initiatives to further boost production and export opportunities.

The district of Tonk has achieved remarkable success in mustard cultivation, contributing significantly to the state’s overall production. Farmers and industry stakeholders are now urging the state government to declare Tonk a mustard hub and implement special schemes to enhance mustard production.

Currently, the state government provides a 50% subsidy on oil mills, with a 75% subsidy for farmers who set up their own mills. There is a strong push for the government to promote the export of mustard oil and its incorporation into food products to maximize benefits. One suggested measure is to include mustard oil in government school nutrition programs.

Additionally, there is a call for the central and state governments to develop a special action plan for solvent plants, which could lead to explosive growth in domestic oil production and help India achieve self-sufficiency in oil.

Despite these advances, there is a pressing need for large-scale warehouses in the district. Although Tonk leads in mustard procurement annually, the lack of adequate warehousing facilities forces traders and oil mill owners to store mustard in separate locations, imposing a financial burden. Establishing large warehouses would streamline storage and alleviate economic strain on these stakeholders.

Addressing these demands and suggestions could greatly benefit both farmers and traders, strengthening the economic framework of the state and reinforcing Rajasthan’s position in the mustard production sector.
