Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said that nearly one lakh rooftop solar installations are being completed across India every six days under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. He made the statement at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi on November 4, describing the scheme as a mass movement delivering household savings and strengthening energy security.
Joshi highlighted that India’s installed solar capacity has increased from 3 GW in 2014 to 172 GW. He added that the rooftop solar initiative is helping households reduce electricity expenses and earn additional income by selling surplus power to the grid.
The 4th International Conference on Green Hydrogen, held alongside the summit, reviewed the progress of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and its efforts to strengthen India’s green hydrogen ecosystem. The mission aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 5 million tonnes by 2030. Discussions covered topics such as electrolyser manufacturing, hydrogen mobility, fuel cells and sustainable aviation fuel.
A major highlight of the summit was the launch of the RTSE Vendor Buddy tool, developed by C-STEP with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies and in association with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The platform enables rooftop solar vendors to assess roof layouts, create 3D solar system designs and generate technical drawings and bills of materials.
The summit also included discussions on clean energy partnerships with Norway, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom and France, with a primary focus on green hydrogen, offshore wind and renewable energy financing. Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik called for greater international cooperation, investment and technology sharing to accelerate the development of clean energy.
This summit also covered topics such as wind energy, battery storage, grid modernization and the role of artificial intelligence in renewable energy. India’s solar module manufacturing capacity has surpassed 200 GW, while solar cell manufacturing capacity has reached approximately 45 GW.
This event brought together policymakers, investors, manufacturers and international stakeholders to discuss investment opportunities, technical partnerships and ways to strengthen India’s renewable energy ecosystem.
