Prime Minister Narendra Modi has marked a new chapter in Ladakh’s development by virtually initiating the Shinkhun La Tunnel Project. This ambitious infrastructure venture, featuring a 4.1 km long Twin-Tube tunnel situated at an altitude of roughly 15,800 feet, is poised to become the highest tunnel in the world upon completion.
In his address during the virtual launch, Modi highlighted the tunnel’s strategic and developmental significance. “The Shinkhun La Tunnel will ensure all-weather connectivity to Ladakh, facilitating efficient movement of our armed forces and equipment,” Modi stated. He emphasized that the tunnel represents a crucial leap in overcoming the region’s harsh climatic challenges and supporting national security.
The Shinkhun La Tunnel is designed to provide a reliable link along the Nimu – Padum – Darcha Road, improving accessibility in one of India’s most remote and strategically important areas. Beyond its military benefits, the tunnel is expected to drive economic development by enhancing transportation links and promoting regional trade and tourism.
Modi’s remarks underscored the dual impact of the project: enhancing defense logistics while fostering economic growth. “The tunnel will not only support military operations but also stimulate local development and improve the quality of life in Ladakh,” he noted.
