The 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum concluded in New Delhi on October 27. On this occasion, a joint declaration was adopted by consensus, reaffirming the commitment of member nations to global peace, cooperation against terrorism, United Nations reform and sustainable development.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who inaugurated the two-day forum, emphasized the need to strengthen international cooperation and dialogue to address global challenges. The forum was held under India’s 2026 BRICS presidency and brought together parliamentary leaders from member and partner countries.
The declaration reaffirmed the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereign equality, mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs and the peaceful resolution of disputes. It also called for reform of the UN Security Council to ensure more inclusive global governance and greater representation for the Global South.
On counter-terrorism, participating parliaments condemned terrorism and called for coordinated efforts to counter terrorist organizations and their activities. The joint declaration also emphasized expanding digital public infrastructure, ensuring the ethical use of artificial intelligence and enhancing cooperation on climate action.
Addressing the valedictory session, Om Birla said lasting solutions to global challenges could be achieved through dialogue, peace and cooperation rather than conflict. He emphasised that parliaments must adapt to technological advancements while strengthening transparency, accountability and public trust.
Birla also emphasized that the benefits of BRICS cooperation should reach the broader international community, with greater consideration given to the aspirations of developing countries in global decision-making.
The 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum concluded with a closing session. On this occasion, Om Birla extended his best wishes to China, which is set to assume the BRICS presidency in 2027. Furthermore, the member nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation and working together for global peace and development.
