According to a government factsheet released on Monday, work has commenced on 396 major infrastructure projects—with a total investment of ₹18.66 lakh crore—across the country under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP) as of August 11, 2026. Of these, 256 projects have received approval, and work is currently underway on 198.
Better Planning via Digital Platform
This institutional framework is supported by a digital platform that provides planners with geospatial data, satellite imagery, and analytical tools. The PM GatiShakti NMP maps economic, social, and logistics nodes alongside multi-modal connectivity infrastructure. This facilitates the identification of essential infrastructure linkages for economic zones and development projects, while also highlighting connectivity gaps.
Mapping Economic Zones and Examples
Economic zones such as textile and pharmaceutical clusters, defence corridors, electronics parks, industrial corridors, fishing clusters, and agricultural zones are mapped under this initiative. For instance, there is a plan to connect the Khagaria-Purnia corridor in Bihar with five PM GatiShakti economic nodes (including textile clusters, mega food parks, and fishing/seafood parks) and 11 logistics nodes to ensure the rapid movement of goods and passengers.
Evolution into a Nationwide Planning Framework
Launched on October 13, 2021, PM GatiShakti consolidated data from various ministries, states, and union territories onto a common GIS-based platform. Five years later, this approach has evolved into a nationwide planning framework. It saves both cost and time by enabling the integrated planning of networks such as roads, railways, ports, airports, waterways, and utilities. Six Principles and Seven Infrastructure Engines
This plan is based on six principles: integrated development, multimodal infrastructure, last-mile connectivity, rapid land acquisition, streamlined clearances, and minimal environmental impact. Its seven key sectors—roads, railways, ports, waterways, airports, mass transport, and logistics—serve as its engines.
Comprehensive Coverage and Data
The National Master Plan encompasses 58 central ministries and departments, along with all 36 states and union territories. A public platform provides access to 230 approved datasets. As of October 12, over 23,493 data layers are available on the GIS platform, aiding in site analysis, connectivity mapping, and regulatory compliance. PM GatiShakti is making infrastructure planning more coordinated, efficient, and data-driven.
