CWG 2026: Mirabai Chanu Claims Third Consecutive Gold Medal with Record-Breaking Performance

Date:

Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu secured India’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a record-breaking performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event. The 31-year-old lifted a total of 190 kg, setting a new Games record and clinching the Commonwealth Games title for the third consecutive time.

Chanu set new Commonwealth Games records in both disciplines, lifting 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. The victory extends her remarkable dominance at the Games after gold-medal finishes in the 2018 and 2022 editions.

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Chanu. They praised her determination, consistency, and dedication, describing her victory as a moment of pride for Indian sports and an inspiration for aspiring athletes.

India won two more silver medals in weightlifting. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh secured second place in the men’s 60kg event by lifting a total of 264kg, while Raja Muthupandi won the silver medal in the men’s 65kg category with a total lift of 286kg. Singh equalled the Games record by lifting 121kg in the snatch, and Malaysia’s Muhammad Aznil bin Bidin won the gold medal in the 65kg event with a record total lift of 299kg.

With the latest results, India’s medal tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has risen to four—one gold, two silver, and one bronze. The country’s campaign began on the opening day of the competition when para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar won a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight category.
