Rome Summit: Modi and Meloni Outline a Bold New Roadmap for India-Italy Relations at the Colosseum

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held an informal meeting in Rome ahead of India’s official bilateral talks. The two leaders took a car ride in Rome on Tuesday evening, had a private dinner together, and visited the Colosseum before the formal events. The meeting reflects the deepening ties between the two countries.

This meeting marks the final phase of Prime Minister Modi’s five-nation foreign tour (Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, and Italy). Italy plays a key role in strengthening India-Europe relations. During the meeting, the two countries will primarily focus on issues such as trade, security, technology, and clean energy.

Photographs and videos shared online showed PM Modi and Meloni engaged in lengthy conversations while touring the illuminated Colosseum. The relaxed atmosphere of the evening drew attention globally, especially after both leaders posted messages on social media highlighting their personal rapport and commitment to stronger bilateral ties.

In a post on X, PM Modi stated that he had “productive discussions” with the Italian Prime Minister on various issues and looked forward to expanding cooperation in several sectors. Giorgia Meloni also shared pictures from the meeting and referred to Modi as a close friend, reflecting the growing diplomatic chemistry between the two leaders.

The upcoming formal talks are expected to cover several key areas, including economic collaboration, defence manufacturing, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, semiconductor partnerships, and maritime security. Officials from both countries are also expected to discuss progress under the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, which aims to deepen long-term cooperation between the two nations.

Another major issue likely to dominate discussions is the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a strategic connectivity project involving India, Europe, and West Asian nations. Both countries are expected to explore opportunities for infrastructure investment, trade routes, and supply chain resilience under the initiative.

PM Modi also received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora upon his arrival in Rome. Hundreds of members of the Indian community gathered outside his hotel waving Indian flags and chanting slogans in support of the Prime Minister. Cultural performances were also organised to mark his visit.

During his visit to Italy, Prime Minister Modi will meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and visit the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) office. The primary objective of this trip is to strengthen India’s trade and friendship with major global institutions and European countries. Furthermore, the meeting between Modi and Meloni is an important step towards deepening India-Italy relations in the changing international landscape.
