The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Yogi Adityanath, has launched the Mukhyamantri Gram Parivahan Yojana 2026 to strengthen rural connectivity across the state.
Under this ambitious scheme, bus services will be extended to more than 12,000 villages that currently lack access to public transport. The initiative aims to connect rural areas with education, healthcare, employment, and markets.
New Development Model: Beyond Roads to Reliable Transport
Launched from Lucknow, the scheme highlights a shift in development strategy—moving beyond just building roads to ensuring reliable and regular transport services on them.
Data shows that household spending on rural transport has increased from 4.2% in 2011-12 to 7.5% in 2022-23, underlining the growing need for accessible transportation.
Smaller Buses for Remote Villages
The plan aims to connect over 59,000 gram sabhas across the state. Notably, around 5,000 villages, where large buses cannot operate, will be served by smaller buses with up to 28 seats.
Each gram panchayat will have at least two bus services daily, starting operations from 10 AM, with mandatory return services ensured by 8 PM to maintain consistency.
Jobs Opportunity: Local Jobs to Get a Boost
The scheme is also expected to generate employment opportunities for rural youth. Drivers and support staff will be recruited locally, creating jobs at the grassroots level.
Private operators are being encouraged to participate through tax benefits and relaxed permit rules, strengthening both transport services and the rural economy.
District-Level Monitoring for Smooth Implementation
To ensure efficient implementation, district-level committees will be formed under the supervision of District Magistrates. These committees will oversee fare regulation and service quality.
The mandatory return of buses to villages by night will help maintain reliability and regularity in services.
Major Relief for Students and Rural Families
The initiative is expected to benefit nearly 1.5 crore students, making it easier for them to commute to schools and colleges, thereby reducing dropout rates.
Rural families will also gain relief from expensive and unreliable transport options, leading to reduced daily expenses.
