Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the opposition bloc, INDIA, on Friday, April 26, following the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the plea for 100 per cent VVPAT verification of EVM votes. He stated that every leader of the opposition has “committed the sin” of creating doubts in the minds of people about the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), and “their dreams have been shattered.”
During an election rally in Araria, Bihar, PM Modi alleged that the RJD and Congress alliance in Bihar shows little regard for the constitution of India or democracy. He claimed, “They did not let people exercise their right to vote for decades. Booth capturing was very common… They did not even let the people step out to vote.”
The Prime Minister further argued that now, when the poor and honest voters have the strength of EVM, the opposition is trying all they can to get rid of the EVM. He hailed the Supreme Court’s strong verdict stating that the old system of ballot paper voting will not return.
PM Modi called on opposition parties to apologize to the people for creating doubts about the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He said, “Today, the whole world praises India for its democracy, for its election process, and its use of technology in the election process and these people for their own self-interest were defaming the EVMs. These people have continuously tried to betray democracy.”
Targeting the RJD and INDIA bloc parties, he alleged that they are the ones who for decades snatched the rights of the poor through the excuse of ballot paper. He said, “Polling booths were looted, paper ballots were looted. Today when voters have been empowered, those who indulged in loot on election day, tried to snatch, they are also uneasy, they have one task day and night that EVM should not be there.”
The Prime Minister’s comments come in the wake of ongoing debates and controversies surrounding the use of EVMs in the Indian electoral process. His remarks have sparked a fresh round of discussions on the issue, with various stakeholders weighing in on the matter.
