From Seasonal to All-Season: Jaisalmer Gets Summer Flight Boost from May 3

Date:

Jaipur: In a major boost to Rajasthan’s tourism sector, Jaisalmer is set to transform into a year-round travel destination with the introduction of summer flight services starting May 3. The move marks a significant shift for the desert city, which has traditionally seen air connectivity limited to the peak winter tourist season.

Officials say the new initiative will ensure continuous air connectivity even during the off-season, helping maintain tourist inflow beyond the winter months. The flights are being introduced under a unique public participation model, aimed at strengthening accessibility while also supporting local tourism stakeholders.

Expanding Tourism Beyond Winter

Known as the “Golden City” for its iconic sandstone architecture, Jaisalmer has long been a favourite among domestic and international travellers. However, the lack of regular flights during summer months often led to a sharp dip in visitor numbers. With the launch of these new services, authorities expect to bridge the seasonal gap and stabilise tourism throughout the year.

According to officials, the new flight operations will not only improve convenience for tourists but also provide a major economic boost to local businesses, including hotels, tour operators, and handicraft sellers. Continuous connectivity is expected to generate employment opportunities and sustain livelihoods that are heavily dependent on tourism.

Economic Boost for Local Businesses

The development also aligns with broader efforts to enhance regional connectivity across Rajasthan. Improved air links have already shown positive results in recent months, with tourist footfall rising due to better accessibility. Industry experts believe that ensuring flights during lean seasons is crucial to maintaining momentum in the tourism sector.

The Jaisalmer Airport, located around 12 km from the city, operates as a civil enclave on an Indian Air Force base and has been gradually expanding its services. The addition of summer flights is being seen as a strategic step to unlock the city’s full tourism potential and reduce its dependence on seasonal travel patterns.

Towards Year-Round Destination Status

Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the decision, noting that consistent air connectivity can attract a wider range of travellers, including those interested in cultural tourism, desert experiences, and heritage exploration. Attractions like the historic fort, sand dunes, and desert festivals are expected to draw visitors even during traditionally quieter months.

Experts also point out that the move could help position Jaisalmer as a competitive destination alongside other major tourist hubs in India, especially as travellers increasingly seek unique and less crowded experiences. With improved infrastructure and connectivity, the city is now aiming to expand its appeal beyond seasonal tourism and establish itself on the global travel map.

Overall, the introduction of summer flights from May 3 signals a proactive shift in tourism planning, with authorities focusing on sustainability, accessibility, and long-term growth. If successful, the initiative could serve as a model for other seasonal destinations looking to achieve year-round tourism.
