Centre Releases ₹4,383.98 Crore to Rural Local Bodies in UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra

The Central Government has released ₹4,383.98 crore in financial assistance to rural local bodies in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra to strengthen rural development.

The funds have been released under the Fifteenth Finance Commission (XV-FC) to support Panchayati Raj Institutions and rural local bodies.


Uttar Pradesh Receives Highest Allocation

Among the states:

  • Uttar Pradesh received ₹2,339.10 crore
  • Bihar received ₹1,203.60 crore
  • Jharkhand received ₹412.69 crore
  • Maharashtra received funds in multiple instalments

Funds to Boost Rural Infrastructure

The financial assistance aims to enhance:

  • Basic infrastructure in villages
  • Local development works
  • Delivery of essential services

Tied and Untied Grants Explained

The government stated that the funds are released as “tied” and “untied” grants:

Tied Grants:

To be used for essential services such as:

  • Sanitation and cleanliness
  • Maintaining ODF (Open Defecation Free) status
  • Solid waste management
  • Drinking water supply

Untied Grants:

  • Can be used by Panchayats based on local needs and priorities
  • Cannot be used for salaries or administrative expenses

Funds Released in Two Instalments

The funds are released by the Ministry of Finance based on recommendations from:

  • Ministry of Panchayati Raj
  • Ministry of Jal Shakti

They are disbursed in two instalments every financial year.


Push for Grassroots Development

The move is expected to:

  • Strengthen rural infrastructure
  • Improve service delivery
  • Accelerate development at the grassroots level
