Jodhpur Marks 141 Years of Railways as First Train Ran Between Jodhpur and Luni in 1885

Date:

Residents of Marwar are celebrating an important milestone in the region’s railway history. On March 9, 1885, the first train ran between Jodhpur and Luni, marking the beginning of railway connectivity in the region.

The launch of the first train not only accelerated transportation in Marwar but also played a key role in shaping the region’s social and economic development.

Jodhpur Railway Division Under North Western Railway

Today, the Jodhpur Railway Division functions under the administrative control of the North Western Railway.

Passenger traffic at the Jodhpur City Railway Station has been steadily increasing over the years. Currently, the station has five platforms to handle train operations and passenger movement.

Travel in Marwar Before the Arrival of Railways

According to railway history expert Rajendra Singh Sankhla, during the late 19th century the Jodhpur princely state was an important centre for trade and strategic activities.

At that time, long-distance travel was mainly conducted using camels, bullock carts, and horses. The construction of the railway line was therefore considered a revolutionary step for the region, significantly improving connectivity and trade.

Over the years, the Jodhpur railway network has expanded considerably, transforming transportation in the region.

Major Redevelopment of Jodhpur Railway Station Underway

The historic Jodhpur City Railway Station building, which is about 138 years old, is now being redeveloped into a modern railway facility.

According to Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Anurag Tripathi, the redevelopment project is being carried out at an estimated cost of ₹474.52 crore. The initiative aims to provide better facilities for passengers and improve the utilization of railway resources.

New Station to Reflect Jodhpur’s Cultural Heritage

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Hitesh Yadav said that the redevelopment work is expected to be completed by November this year.

The new station building will showcase elements of Jodhpur’s rich cultural heritage and architecture, while also offering upgraded passenger amenities and improved infrastructure.

The redevelopment project is expected to further strengthen rail connectivity and passenger experience in one of Rajasthan’s most historic railway hubs.
