Under PM Modi, Assam and Northeast See Massive Railway Expansion and Record Investment

Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, Assam and the Northeast region are witnessing a major transformation in railway connectivity, bringing improved infrastructure, enhanced safety, and new economic opportunities.

For decades, railway development in the Northeast was marked by limited connectivity, slow progress, and incomplete projects due to challenging geographical conditions and insufficient investment. However, the situation has significantly changed, with the region now emerging as a key focus of India’s railway expansion.

Budget Allocation for Northeast Railways Increases Fivefold

One of the most significant indicators of this transformation is the sharp rise in railway budget allocation.

During 2009–14, the average annual railway budget allocation for Assam and the Northeast was about ₹2,122 crore. In 2026–27, this allocation has increased to ₹11,486 crore, reflecting nearly a fivefold increase.

This rise highlights the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening connectivity and accelerating development in the Northeast region.

Major Railway Projects Worth ₹72,000 Crore Underway

Currently, railway projects worth more than ₹72,468 crore are under various stages of development in Assam and the Northeast.

These projects include:

  • Construction of new railway lines
  • Modernization of railway stations
  • Safety-related infrastructure improvements

The investments are expected to significantly improve passenger convenience, freight movement, and regional economic development.

60 Stations Being Redeveloped Under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

To enhance passenger experience, 60 railway stations in Assam and the Northeast are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

The redevelopment, costing about ₹2,101 crore, will introduce modern passenger amenities, improved accessibility, upgraded design, and digital services.

The Habargaon railway station redevelopment project has already been completed.

Rapid Expansion of Railway Network

Since 2014, approximately 1,900 kilometres of new railway lines have been constructed across Assam and the Northeast region.

This expansion is greater than the entire railway network of Sri Lanka, highlighting the scale of infrastructure development in the region.

Railway electrification has also progressed rapidly. States such as:

  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Meghalaya
  • Nagaland
  • Tripura
  • Mizoram

have achieved 100% railway electrification, while Assam is expected to reach the milestone soon.

Improved Safety Through Rail Overbridges and Kavach System

To improve safety and reduce congestion at railway crossings, 502 rail flyovers and underpasses have been constructed across the region.

In addition, India’s indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system is being implemented.

Work and tendering for 235 route kilometres is underway, while approval has been granted for 1,197 route kilometres in the Northeast.

Modern Train Services Expanding Connectivity

Modern train services such as:

  • Vande Bharat Express
  • Vande Bharat Sleeper
  • Amrit Bharat Express

are now operating in the region, offering faster, safer, and more comfortable travel.

New Railway Projects and Train Services for Assam

The Prime Minister is set to dedicate several major railway projects and new train services to Assam.

Key initiatives include:

  • Foundation stone for the 194-km Furkating–Tinsukia railway line doubling project
  • Foundation for a POH (Periodic Overhaul) workshop at Basbari for maintenance of railway coaches and wagons

Additionally, electrification of the following railway lines will be dedicated to the nation:

  • 558 km Rangiya–Murkongselek line
  • 571 km Chaparmukh–Dibrugarh line
  • 315 km Badarpur–Silchar and Badarpur–Churaibari lines

Launch of New Train Services

Three new train services will also be launched to improve connectivity in the region:

  • Kamakhya–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express
  • Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Express
  • Narangi–Agartala Express

These services are expected to strengthen trade, tourism, and social connectivity between the Northeast and other parts of India.

Boost to Economic Growth and Regional Integration

The railway expansion in Assam and the Northeast is not just about building tracks and running trains. It represents a broader transformation aimed at boosting economic opportunities, regional development, and national integration.

Officials say the ongoing railway projects are a crucial step toward realizing the vision of “Viksit Northeast, Viksit Bharat.”
