Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday flagged off the Meerut Metro and Namo Bharat train services at Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station in Meerut. The launch marks a major milestone in strengthening regional connectivity and urban transport across the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Prime Minister dedicated the 82-kilometre-long Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor to the nation, significantly boosting high-speed rail connectivity between Delhi and key cities in Uttar Pradesh.
PM Modi Inaugurates Key Sections of Delhi-Meerut RRTS
During the event, PM Modi also inaugurated the remaining sections of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), including:
- A 5-km stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi
- A 21-km stretch from Meerut South to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh
The project is part of the ambitious Delhi–Meerut RRTS, designed to provide faster and more efficient travel between Delhi and Meerut.
Upon his arrival in Meerut, the Prime Minister was welcomed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BJP state president Pankaj Choudhary.
PM Interacts with Students During Metro Ride
PM Modi also took a ride on the Meerut Metro up to Meerut South Station, where he interacted with passengers and students onboard. During the interaction, two students showed the Prime Minister some photographs, making the journey memorable for commuters.
Namo Bharat: India’s First Regional Rapid Transit System
With a top speed of 180 kmph, the Namo Bharat train is India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System. The service will connect major urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut with Delhi in significantly reduced travel time.
The corridor’s starting station, Sarai Kale Khan, has been developed as a major multi-modal transport hub. It seamlessly connects with Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Veer Haqiqat Rai ISBT, and Ring Road.
Four Namo Bharat stations inaugurated as part of this phase include:
- Sarai Kale Khan (Delhi)
- Shatabdi Nagar (Meerut)
- Begumpul (Meerut)
- Modipuram (Meerut)
Seamless Integration of Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro
The integrated infrastructure of Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro allows both high-speed inter-city travel and convenient intra-city commuting on the same network. This model is being seen as a benchmark for integrated urban and regional transport in India.
The project is also expected to reduce road congestion across NCR and significantly cut carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles, contributing to cleaner and greener mobility solutions.
