New Delhi: In a significant move to modernise operations and enhance transparency, Indian Railways has rolled out two major reforms under its ‘52 Reforms in 52 Weeks’ campaign. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officially launched the new Rail Tech Policy along with the fully digital e-RCT (Railway Claims Tribunal) system.
The twin initiatives aim to promote technological innovation across railway services and streamline the claims process through complete digitisation.
Rail Tech Policy: Opening Doors for Startups and Innovators
The newly introduced Rail Tech Policy establishes a dedicated RailTech Portal, enabling startups, researchers, industry leaders and institutions to directly collaborate with Indian Railways.
Through this digital platform, innovators can submit technology proposals online. The government has simplified the selection process and increased financial assistance for prototype development and pilot trials.
Key Technology Areas Identified
Indian Railways has prioritised the adoption of advanced solutions in the following sectors:
- AI-powered elephant intrusion detection systems
- Artificial intelligence-based fire detection in coaches
- Drone surveillance for railway track monitoring
- Fog vision and obstacle detection systems
- Solar energy integration and smart coach monitoring
According to the minister, the policy will accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies to enhance passenger safety, operational efficiency and monitoring systems.
e-RCT System: Claims Process Goes Paperless
As part of another major reform, the Railway Claims Tribunal (RCT) has been transitioned to a fully digital format through the e-RCT platform.
Passengers filing claims related to railway accidents, injuries or other disputes will now be able to complete the entire process online, eliminating the need for physical visits to tribunal offices.
Key Features of e-RCT
- 24/7 online case filing
- Hybrid virtual hearings
- Real-time status tracking
- Digital document submission and storage
- Immediate online access to tribunal orders
Indian Railways plans to digitise all 23 RCT benches across the country within the next year.
Faster, Transparent and Passenger-Friendly
The new system is expected to significantly reduce paperwork, travel costs and delays in claim settlements. Passengers and legal representatives will benefit from:
- Remote filing from any location
- SMS and email notifications
- Reduced procedural complexity
- Improved transparency
- Faster case resolution
Strengthening Digital Governance in Railways
The introduction of the Rail Tech Policy and e-RCT system highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to digital governance and innovation-led growth.
By encouraging startups to contribute technological solutions and making grievance redressal fully online, the government aims to build a smarter, safer and more efficient railway network for millions of passengers nationwide.
