Ghaziabad Records Major Rise in Sex Ratio, Crosses 960 Mark After Seven-Year Reform Drive

Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh: The ‘Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar’ (Healthy Woman, Empowered Family) campaign has delivered encouraging results in Ghaziabad, with the district recording a significant improvement in its sex ratio over the past seven years.

According to the district health department, the sex ratio has risen from 928 in 2019 to over 960 in 2025, marking one of the most notable improvements since 2016. Officials attribute this steady rise to strict monitoring, legal enforcement against illegal practices, and sustained awareness campaigns.

Steady Growth in Sex Ratio Over Seven Years

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Akhilesh Mohan stated that the district’s sex ratio improved gradually year after year:

  • 2019: 928
  • 2020: 929
  • 2023: 933
  • 2024: 956
  • 2025: 959+

Health authorities said the data reflects the impact of consistent supervision and crackdown measures aimed at preventing gender-based discrimination.

Crackdown on Illegal Ultrasound Centres

The district administration has intensified action against illegally operated ultrasound centres involved in unlawful prenatal sex determination.

Over the past year:

  • More than 20 locations were inspected
  • Five centres were shut down immediately for violations

Officials said strict enforcement of the law has helped curb illegal fetal sex determination practices and improved compliance among medical establishments.

Role of ASHA and Anganwadi Workers

Grassroots health workers have played a crucial role in improving the district’s gender balance.

ASHA and Anganwadi workers have been:

  • Conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns
  • Promoting the importance of girl children
  • Ensuring registration and regular health check-ups of pregnant women

Their efforts have contributed to safer deliveries and greater acceptance of the birth of girl children.

Special Focus on High-Risk Pregnancies

The health department has also focused on identifying high-risk pregnancies to ensure safe maternal care.

In the past year:

  • Approximately 450 high-risk pregnant women were identified
  • Around 350 of them successfully delivered safely

Officials said targeted intervention has reduced complications and improved maternal health outcomes.

Impact of Awareness Campaigns

Awareness drives under initiatives such as “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” have been promoted in schools and community programmes. Authorities noted a positive shift in societal attitudes towards gender equality.

The health department has affirmed that strict monitoring, continued awareness campaigns and legal action against violations will remain ongoing to maintain and further improve the district’s sex ratio.

The progress in Ghaziabad highlights how coordinated health interventions, law enforcement and community engagement can collectively address gender imbalance and promote social equity.
